History:
Shane has been very active his whole life starting
off with basketball for 8 years until he was around
13. He lost interest in it because it was not
challenging anymore. He moved onto football and
cricket for a short time, during which he was
also doing a lot of track cycling with his dad.
His dad was a cycling coach and previously had
competed in the 1964 Olympics and won a bronze
medal in the sprint competition at the Commonwealth
Games in Jamaica. He has been surrounded by cycling
ever since he has been born and even though he
was never pushed by his father, once Shane got
sick of football and cricket, it was just a natural
progression that he would follow in his father’s
footsteps. So one day he asked his father if he
could get involved more seriously with cycling
and his father with all of his experience was
only happy to help. Within 3 months Shane had
qualified for the U15 Australian Titles in Sydney.
At these titles he won 2 gold medals and broke
2 Australian records. The fire had started and
now Shane wanted to be the world’s best.
From then on he moved through the age groups and
into the senior ranks, on his way to his very
first Commonwealth Games, achieving 13 Australian
Titles, breaking 2 more Australian records and
winning 2 Jnr World Championships. At the 2006
Commonwealth Games he won a bronze medal and became
the youngest ever Australian Cyclist to win a
games medal.
He is currently training under the Australian
Institute of Sport in Adelaide, looking forward
to the next Olympics in China and is a proud sponsored
athlete for ASN – Advanced Sports Nutrition.
Q:
Shane
how many times do you train a week??
A: We
train quite frequently and every session there
is no room for slacking off or half assed training!
I train in the gym around 3-4 days a week and
on the track cycling around 4-5 sessions per week
doing speed and power work.
Q:
How long do
the training sessions last and what does it involve?
A:
A gym session would last about 2-3 hours and
track sessions, depending on the efforts, from
4-5 hours. Usually the 4-5 hours involves doing
a number of full on sprints then 15-20 minutes
of recovery then back to full on riding again.
I also do 3-4 recovery rides a week for only 1
hour to help get the blood flowing and clear out
my legs.
Q:
How has ASN
– Advanced Sports Nutrition helped you?
A:
My goal is to be remembered as one of the
best track sprint cyclist Australia has ever produced.
Also to be remembered as a great sporting personality.
To get to the top level in this sport or any sport,
it has to become part of your life. You have to
have the drive when there is nothing left in your
legs and the aggression to lift that last rep
when you are seeing stars and your legs are screaming.
To get through this everyday, things such as your
nutrition and supplementation cannot be overlooked.
This is where ASN have helped me through where
others have failed. I need protein as fast as
humanly possible after my gym and track sessions
because I have so little time for recovery in
between sessions. I also have the NANO Glutamine
because of its fast absorption which helps my
immune system and over training syndrome.
Q:
Aside from ASN
supplements what else does you diet involve?
A:
My favourite dish in between sessions and
for lunch is my own little mix of cheavubchachi,
tuna, brown rice, garlic and a little pasta sauce.
This works great for me because it is full of
protein and carbs for energy to get me through
my second session of training.
Q:
How were you
introduced to ASN?
A:
I was first introduced to ASN by Tim Thorton,
who was a champion tri-athlete. Tim worked for
GNC at that time which is a chain of health food
stores. He was helping me out with some of my
nutrition and supplementation and is a big believer
in ASN products. Tim had been speaking to Peter
Memete about myself and getting extra advice from
him about increasing my performances. Tim arranged
for Peter and me to meet and I was given the opportunity
to use these latest ground breaking supplements.
Lets just say, these supplements blew me away!
I love ASN’s attitude towards suppelementation
which is the best supplements with no bull and
scientific evidence to back everything up. From
the start I had faith, but the real surprise was
to come! Once I started using the ASN products
my attitude and lifting was enormous. With my
training, it is so hard to back up day to day
with heavy lifting and fast work out on the track.
With HP-100, NANO Glutamine and NANO Creatine,
I was able to constantly beat my PB’s in
the gym and continue to hold my size. My recovery
between cycling efforts on the track was also
unbeatable. With the help of HPC during the session
I felt unstoppable. My level of fitness and intensity
has increased greatly while using ASN Supplements
and I have moved from single leg squatting 140kg
for 3 reps up to 165kg for 3 reps! I am now continuing
to increase my squatting and deadlift performances.
After a time Peter realised I was serious about
using the products. Having faith in me he offered
me a sponsorship, which came about because I truly
believe in the products and I would have no doubt
in recommending them to any other athlete. As
a matter of fact, my fellow Australian Sprint
Cycling team mates have also become quite interested
in the ASN products, increasing their performances!
Q:
What are the
best ASN supplements you have used?
A:
Well, thats a hard question to answer, because
all of the ASN Supplements are designed to work
together with each other, so seperating 1 or 2
from the rest is difficult. But if I had to choose
between 1 or 2 products, I would definitely choose
the HP-100 and Xtreme Pump. These two products
are a must for performance enhancement and recovery.
There is no other protein on the planet like HP-100
for recovery, enabling me to train day in and
day out at peak performance very day. And, Xtreme
Pump, what can I say, this product takes you to
a new level in regards to perfomance enhancement.
Extra strength, extra stamina, as ASN says; The
Ultamate! But remember you have to use it with
the other supplements for it to work.
Q:
Who are your
sporting hero's?
A:
I have 2 sporting hero's. One is Shane Kelly,
the cyclist, who has inspired me to become a great
sprint cyclist and the other is Roger Federer,
the tennis player, in which I admire his professionalism
as a sportsman and his attitude towards the sport.
Some day I would like to be the Roger Federer
of the sprint cycling world!
Q:
Do you have
a nickname?
A:
I don't have a nickname as such, like 'Power
Perkins' or 'The Shane Train'! Maybe one day I
will have a nickname like that. Most people just
call me 'Perko'
Q:
Do you have
a favourite quote?
A:
Yeah, my favourite quote is ' the sky's the
limit'.
Q:
What about your
personal ambitions?
A:
My personal ambitions are health, happiness
and success. Health - in which ASN play a big
part, happiness - in which I enjoy my cycling
and success - to become the greatest sprint cyclist
of all time.
